What is Noni (Morinda citrifolia)?

Thousands of years ago, the original settlers of French Polynesia set out to row across the ocean and settle new villages. Setting out in their canoes, they could only take what they needed to survive. Noni fruit was among the most important pieces of cargo they brought with them and was seen as a necessary provision for starting a new village. Noni was an important food and medicine, leading them to call it the queen of the canoe plants.

Noni grows throughout parts of Southeast Asia, Polynesia, Australia, and even up into China. Although there are as many names for Noni as there are places that it grows, the proper name of the plant is Morinda citrifolia. Noni is its Hawaiian name.

Amazingly, there is a traditional use for every part of the Morinda citrifolia plant. Hawaiians have used the fruit to control fevers, boils, and numerous diseases, and even to make a shampoo to treat head lice. Throughout parts of Asia, the leaves were used to treat coughs, nausea, and even arthritis.

Despite the array of traditional uses and its long history as an important medicinal plant, Noni remained relatively unknown to the West until about 1996. Since then, commercial Noni has become available to consumers in over 50 countries, where it is sold by over 200 companies. Within this period, Noni has become the subject of scientific research and this research continues to reveal the plant’s healing properties.

Morinda Citrifolia - Noni - Defenition

Morinda citrifolia, commonly known as great morinda, Indian mulberry, noni (from the Hawaiian language) or aal (in Hindi), is a vine-like tree of the Rubiaceae family (dicotyledon plants).

Noni Habitat

Noni is native to Southeast Asia but also spreads to neighboring India and the Pacific islands. The plant grows well on rocky or sandy shores. It can resist to saline conditions as well as drought or secondary soils. It is therefore seen in a large variety of habitats: volcanic terrains, lava-strewn coasts, clearings or limestone outcrops. Like other mangrove and coastal plants, the Noni plant stabilizes the soil and provides shade for shorter plants to grow.

Noni Tree Description

The Noni tree can grow 5-9 meters tall with flowers and fruits that bloom all year round. The flowers are small and white, while the fruit is a fleshy yellow fruit.

Noni Fruit Description

The noni is a fruit with a pungent odor. It is oval and reaches 4-7 cm in size. At first green, the fruit turns yellowish or even white as it ripens and contains many seeds.

Noni Consumption

Despite its smell, the fruit is nevertheless eaten as a food and, in some Pacific islands, even a staple food, either raw or cooked. Southeast Asians and Australian Aborigenes consume the fruit raw with salt or cook it with curry. Seeds are also edible when roasted.

United States and Canada has now bagen marketing noni as a heath food item.

Noni Health Interests

The recent discovery and study of the chemical Xeronine has shed light onto Noni’s traditional reputation. According to the research of Dr. Ralph Heinicke, Xeronine is a chemical produced in the large intestine which strengthens and reinforces protein structure. Proxeronine is the precursor to Xeronine in the body. Applying Proxeronine to the skin stimulates Xeronine synthesis which speeds the healing process and helps to remove dead tissue. This explains Noni’s traditional use in treating burns, wounds, and bruises. After the liver, human skin stores the largest amounts of Xeronine. (Note: Some scientific evidence suggests the existence and helath benefits of Xeronine, however the FDA has determined that this evidence is limited and not conclusive.)

Noni is known to contain over 140 different nutrients, although only a few of them are well-understood by science. These include some lesser-known chemicals called Anthraquinones and Damnacanthal, a chemical which has been shown in laboratory settings to inhibit some chemical reactions that mark the onset of cancer. However, Noni is also a rich source of several vitamins and minerals such as Potassium, Magnesium, Iron, Niacin, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant.

Noni also contains the natural antibiotics Acubin, Alazarin, and Anthraquinone, as well as the antifungal Caprylic and Caproic Acids. Noni also contains Beta sitosterol and Scopoletin which promote healthy circulation and help maintain the health of blood vessels.

While Xeronine helps to explain Noni’s reputation as a brain stimulator, the fruit also contains Scopoletin, which is linked to increased levels of Seratonin, a neurochemical known as the mood molecule. Deficiencies of Seratonin are linked to problems like depression, suicide, anxiety, over-eating, schizophrenia, and patterns of violence and addiction.

Among Noni’s most well-understood properties is its role as an antioxidant. Much of the current research into Noni’s antioxidant and anti-cancer potential is ongoing at institutions like the University of Hawaii and the University of Chicago. Although most of the current Noni research regarding cancer takes place in Hawaii, the Morinda citrifolia plant is getting attention from universities as far away as Pakistan and Papua New Guinea.
